Blankets in rural Malawi are a luxury. Malawi is one of the world’s most underprivileged countries. About 85% of the population of Malawi lives in rural areas and depends on subsistence farming. These families focus on basic necessities for their survival. A blanket is not considered a basic necessity. When these families take in orphans and other vulnerable children they share what little they have with even more people. In the colder months of May – August it is not uncommon for families to have fires inside their huts to keep warm. These inside fires are unhealthy and it is not uncommon for children to burn themselves because they slept close to the fire or for the hut to catch on fire. During the colder months school attendance drops by 25% due to preventable illnesses from the cold.

Please help more children attend school. When they have a blanket the children will be more rested, healthier, and better able to learn. As they grow into their future years, the children will be in a better position to make a positive impact in their communities. In their culture they will ‘pay it forward’ and provide for others in their community.

Retreat for High School Aged Orphans

These are some of the teenagers who will be going on a one day retreat in June, 2017. The retreat will focus on how to have healthy, Christian relationships with friends, future spouses, and family. There will be four days where twenty-five different students attend each day long retreat at Lake Malawi for a total of 100 teenagers attending.

These teenagers live about 40 kilometers from Lake Malawi and have never been there. This will be an amazing time in a beautiful area in their country where they will learn about faith and daily life, self-image, setting goals, overcoming obstacles, dating and choosing a life partner, and more. These sessions are based on My Zoe Journal written by Pastor Amy and sold through Sola Publishing.

The team includes Pastor Andy, Susan, Pastor Amy, Anna, Gary and Lorie from First English Lutheran Church, Mansfield, Ohio and Trinity Lutheran, Monroeville, Ohio. Shadreck and Yami Chikoti from Malawi will also lead some of the sessions.

Please pray for the presenters that they share what God intends and that the students learn what God has for them to learn.

Manna for Malawi 2017

Manna for Malawi will be held on Sunday, June 25 from 4 – 8 pm. at the Woodtick Inn in Cuyna, MN.

The Lamant Cranston Band will perform again this year at this annual music and food benefit.

Other featured artists will include Gravel Roads, Christian country band based in Anoka.  Italian food prepared by Maucieri’s in Crosslake will be served. A freewill offering will be taken. Last year’s event brought in more than $25,000. All proceeds from the music fundraiser go directly to the MOCP feeding program.

Kanyenyeva Ministry Executive Director Shadrek Chikoti says “again, there will be hunger in most parts of Malawi this year. The price of maize continues to skyrocket in the coming months. More mouths to feed and less to feed them with. We are truly blessed by MOCP.”

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby, MN sponsors this event which raises money for the feeding program.
